The Nambikwara
Claude Lévi-Strauss' voyage to the Nambikwara in 1938 inspired the most poetic lines of his influential Tristes Tropiques and some of the most moving images of Saudades do Brasil: A Photographic Memoir. What has become of the Nambikwara since?
Marcelo Fiorini, anthropologist and filmmaker, has been studying the Nambikwara since 1986 and is currently working on a documentary film about Lévi-Strauss' journey to the Amazon. He was accompanied in 2007 by Murat on a visit to villages in Mato Grosso to start creating a photographic portrait of the Nambikwara seventy years after Lévi-Strauss' sojourn among them. The images presented here are from this recent trip.
Images from Fiorini's work of twenty years with the forest-dwelling Nambikwara of the Guaporé Valley as well as of the Sarare and Wakalitesu villages will soon be presented on this site also.
